The origins of the Dingo (Canis Lupis dingo) can be traced to a southern Asian variant of the Grey Wolf, so it is related to the wild canines of our northern neighbours.  The earliest archaeological evidence of the Dingo dates back 3,500 years, but recent DNA studies indicate it has been in Australia significantly longer it occurs in varied habitats across much of the mainland, though is absent in parts of the south and it has never reached Tasmania.

Standing around 60 centimetres tall and weighing up to 18 kgs, the Dingo is a short-haired canine, with a coat usually coloured golden yellow to reddish tan or darker, depending on the environment it inhabits.  While this territorial carnivore may be considered a wild dog, it rarely barks, though it howls much like a wolf, particularly at night.
