Mintage 30,000
For nine decades the ABC, Australia’s National Broadcaster, has told the Australian story through a myriad of platforms and media. The Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was officially launched on 1 July 1932 and has since become a much loved touchstone of Australia’s social and cultural fabric. Starting as a single radio service, ‘Aunty’ has grown into a multi-platform media operation and a public broadcaster of international renown. The ABC Charter, set down by Parliament, requires the ABC to provide informative, entertaining and educational services that reflect the breadth of our nation.
Over the decades, the ABC has created some of the most iconic Australian content and truly become the voice of the nation. Everything from Play School and Bluey, 4 Corners and This Day Tonight, to Count Down and Triple J Top 100, the ABC has always innovated, commentated and reflected what it is to be Australian.
As a fellow teller of Australian stories, the Royal Australian Mint is proud to help the ABC celebrate 90 years. Happy Birthday Aunty!
