Australia has 20 sites listed on the World Heritage Register, these sites, each unique, beautiful & vulnerable, are featured in a magnificient montage on this coloured $5 coin.  The coin release coincide with the ICOMOS 21st General Assembly & Scientific Symposium, being hosted in Sydney  in 2023.

The World Heritage Convention 1972 underpins the protection & preservation of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List through UNESCO.  These sites must be outstanding & highly significant examples of national & cultural heritage.  

The World Heritage concept came about through a collaboration between UNESCO and the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), who recognised the requirement to develop strategies to protect sites of outstanding natural and cultural value to the world.  Sites that are inscribed on the World Heritage List benefit from international cooperation, financial assistance and knowledge-sharing.
